Classification
If your ship needs to enter class, transfer from another classification society or get its upcoming surveys planned, we run the process end to end. Liva Marine is the exclusive agent of Phoenix Register of Shipping (PHRS), a classification society whose approach follows the IACS model and is adapted to the requirements of the RO Code. You deal with one team from the first review to the class certificate.
What we handle
- Entry into class for existing ships
- Transfer of class from another society
- Classing new buildings

- Coordinating dry-dock and in-water surveys
- Tracking and closing conditions of class
- Class under PHRS rules for steel ships and for commercial and pleasure yachts
- Class work run alongside a change of flag
How it works
Initial review
We review the ship's current class status, open conditions of class and survey schedule. We also look at what the charterers, insurers and ports in your trade expect from the class.
Document collection
We collect the current class certificate, survey status report, plans and related records and prepare the file for PHRS.
Survey planning
We arrange PHRS surveyor attendance around the ship's port calls and, where needed, tie dry-dock or in-water inspection into the same programme.
Class survey
A PHRS surveyor attends the ship and carries out the entry or transfer survey. Any findings are recorded as conditions of class.
Certification
Once the ship is accepted into class, a class certificate is issued with the appropriate class notation and technical particulars.
Keeping class
We track the next periodical surveys and the due dates of open conditions, and start planning before they fall due.
Documents required
- Current class certificate
- Survey status report
- List of open conditions of class and recommendations
- Approved plans and drawings
- Last dry-dock survey report
- Copies of the ship's statutory certificates
- Certificate of Registry

Frequently asked questions
How does a transfer of class work?
The ship's current class status, open conditions and survey schedule are reviewed first. The existing class records are then passed to the new society and a surveyor attends the ship for the transfer survey. If the ship is accepted, a class certificate is issued with the appropriate class notation.
What is ship classification and why does it matter?
Classification confirms, through surveys, that a ship's hull and machinery meet the rules of a classification society. Flag administrations, insurers, charterers and ports generally expect a ship to hold valid class. Class is kept through the class certificate and periodical surveys.
Is a non-IACS classification society a disadvantage?
Some shippers, charterers and insurers require class from an IACS member, so the decision depends on the trade the ship will be in. We discuss this openly with you during the initial review, before any work starts.
Which rules does Phoenix Register of Shipping class to?
PHRS classes ships under its own Rules and Regulations for the Construction of Steel Ships and for the Construction of Commercial and Pleasure Yachts. Its classification approach follows the IACS model, adapted to the requirements of the RO Code.
Can class be changed at the same time as the flag?
Yes, the two can be planned together. When one team handles both, the documents are gathered in a single file and neither process is left waiting for the other.
What documents are needed for a transfer of class?
Usually the current class certificate, survey status report, list of open conditions, approved plans and the last dry-dock survey report. Depending on the ship, further records may be needed; we send you the full list after the initial review.
